We transform
Transform a person- TAPA is based on the understanding that human life is precious and that everyone has a right to live a dignified life as God intended. We therefore exist to bring hope to the destitute living in the abject poverty byproviding means for them to access education, food, Medicare and creating livelihood opportunities. TAPA project has been keen to ensure that the disadvantaged children of Kibera slum access affordable education and their parents given technical knowledge through income generating projects as a way to sustaining themselves.
TAPA offers education to the identified Orphaned and Vulnerable Children from kindergarten to primary school. Our teachers are all qualified and are recruited from Kibera slums in line with our vision of impacting the whole community. Our school motto is;
“Linking children to their potential”
and our activities include class lessons and physical education using the government of Kenya policy manuals and guidelines.
Main Objectives
The TAPA project seeks to achieve the following objectives:
- To provide, on an annual basis, access to quality education to orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) in Kibera slums.
- To improve the nutritional status and access to basic health care to OVC and People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAS) and their families.
- To build the capacity of parents, guardians and caregivers’ skills and knowledge to effectively care for the OVC and PLWHAS.
- To provide vocational skills to vulnerable youths and women, helping them start income generating activities to support themselves and their siblings.
Education
Poor communities are faced with multiple wealth barriers due to inequalities brought about by lack of level playing ground. Educational costs such as books, uniforms and meals are out of reach for many slum families who depend on unreliable casual jobs. These costs have rendered the poor to miss out on the opportunities provided by the free primary public education that the government offers and other benefits that other children in private institutions enjoy.
Income generating Activities and Vocational training
In a bid to ensure that we offer low cost learning services, we developed other Income Generating Activities (IGAs) such as the making and selling student and staff uniform for schools, companies and other institutions. These revenues compliment the finances we raise from donors and well-wishers. Our story of resilience, hard work and innovation has continuously and progressively overshadowed the challenges we have encountered as we serve the less fortunate in our community. As a team, we pride in seeing the beneficiaries achieve their dreams and overcome the harsh conditions that define the neighbourhoods they come from.
The project additionally identifies young people with passion to learn and take them through six months of training in tailoring to equip them with skills in order to start earning a livelihood. Upon completion, some are absorbed in the project’s income generating program while others are connected to the job market equipped with the requisite skills
Other empowerment projects happen through community seminars and workshops. Among the topics covered are safety and protection against Gender Based Violence (GBV), academic excellence, drug/substance abuse, parenting and entrepreneurship among others.
